The First Time I Felt Terror

Too young &
confused by the flash
the sudden lights
inhuman sounds
the crying yelling
smothering smells
humid and too close
gaining consciousness
excruciating pain
ripped by my hair
toward external war

I went looking for
the dark broken
intentions inhuman
sniffing in the pitch
I found namings
for human evil

mentors of human meat
laughter coming gentle
from a distance
at a distance
from other creatures
in the dark

I call out to anyone
who can hear me
laying heaped
upon the darkness

bare floor or cheap carpet
broken weeping seeping
torn sky bending
with the wind
